Understanding Constructed Wetlands

What are the sanitation zones?

In Belgium, wastewater management is handled by the SPGE (Public Water Management Company).

The territory is divided into three types of wastewater treatment zones, as defined in the PASH (Wastewater Treatment Plan by Sub-Watershed). These zones determine how wastewater must be treated and who is responsible for it. Wastewater treatment is essential for protecting the environment and ensuring a healthy living environment.

For over 15 years, PhytoSTEP has been helping you develop a natural, simple wastewater treatment solution tailored to your project.

When connection to the public sewer system is not possible, the building is located in an area requiring an on-site wastewater treatment system. In this case, the owner is responsible for their own wastewater treatment system.

This is where individual wastewater treatment solutions, such as constructed wetlands, really come into their own. With the PhytoSTEP solution:

🌱 You install an approved and compliant wastewater treatment system.
🌱 Simple installation, with no technical complexity.
🌱 Autonomous operation, requiring very little maintenance.
🌱 A sustainable, natural solution that performs well over time.
🌱 An aesthetically pleasing system that blends easily into the garden.

In these areas, homes are connected (or must be connected) to a public sewer system that leads to a community wastewater treatment plant.
Wastewater treatment is therefore handled by public infrastructure.

🌱 The property owner connects to the system whenever possible.
🌱 Municipalities and the SPGE manage the collective wastewater treatment.

Even in areas with collective wastewater treatment, you can choose to treat your graywater (from sources such as showers, washing machines, or sinks) using a suitable individual treatment system.

PhytoSTEP also offers solutions to reuse this water and reduce your water consumption and your environmental impact.
